The Destin High School wrestling team recently made a splash at the Panhandle Championship, a two-day tournament that took place at Mosley High School in Panama City, Florida on January 6th and 7th. The tournament featured 22 of the top wrestling teams from the area, and the DHS Sharks were ready to take on the competition.

Entering the tournament as the newcomer and underdog, our wrestling program had a goal to further establish themselves by exposing their athletes to a variety of talented opponents and increasing their skills on the mat. The team filled only half of the weight classes on the roster, but that didn’t stop them from making an impact.

Our Destin Sharks made a strong showing, finishing in 14th place overall out of 22 teams. The tournament was filled with excitement and thrilling moments, with Adrien DeJesus pulling off a massive upset with a throw, Christian O’Brien winning by decision in a 3rd period victory, Team Captain Patrick Casey working his opponent to set up a takedown, and Reid Granier maneuvering a half to defeat his opponent by pin.

The Panhandle Championship was just the beginning for the Destin High School wrestling team. With their sights set on future tournaments and a passion to succeed, the team is ready to make progress in Florida high school wrestling scene.
